WhatsApp CEO: We don't let governments read our users' messages

WhatsApp has issued a statement announcing that it will not comply with the rules contained in the UK Online Safety Bill. Will Cathcart, CEO of WhatsApp, told the BBC that Meta will not lower its security following any government order. He considered the government's request to access the private messages of users as stupid.

The purpose of the law The Online Safety Bill identifies legal but harmful activities, abuse and harassment. However, due to the uncertain political situation in the UK, the adoption of this law has been delayed. With the passing of the UK's online safety bill, the government can detect unhealthy online activities by controlling social networks and messengers. For example, it should be noted that the government can identify child abuse photos by scanning private messages of users, which violates the end-to-end encryption (E2EE) policy of many platforms and social networks such as WhatsApp.

The CEO of WhatsApp has claimed that this bill is a way to directly and indirectly read users' messages and it is not something that users agree to. On the other hand, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) has expressed its critical views on this.

Andy Burrows, director of online policy for child safety at the NSPCC, announced in a tweet. Hundreds of illegal child abuse photos have already been detected on WhatsApp. He further added that there are methods to identify these images that are very effective and there is no need to compromise the security of all users. It remains to be seen whether this bill, which is opposed by many applications and messengers, including WhatsApp, will be passed or not.
