Oppo unveiled the MariSilicon X just hours before the image processing chip. It should be noted that this is not a versatile chipset like Snapdragon 8 Generation 1 or Google Tensor, but it is used professionally for image processing. According to Oppo, advanced algorithms make attractive innovations in the field of photography possible, but at present the technical limitations of the chipsets are partially preventing the improvement of the image quality. Oppo now wants to improve the quality of photos taken with its phones by using a dedicated image processing chip.

According to the company, the noise reduction algorithms in the Oppo Find X3 Pro based on Snapdragon 888 speed 2 The frame works per second and requires 1693 milliwatts of energy. But the same algorithm runs on the MariSilicon X chip at 40 frames per second and requires only 797 milliwatts of power. This not only reduces the speed of the noise reduction algorithm by 20 times, but also reduces its power consumption by half.

This chip consists of an image processor, neural processing unit and memory . Oppo has announced that phones based on this chip can perform HDR processing directly on RAW images. The same approach leads to a significant reduction in image noise. Also, if the phone is based on an RGBW camera sensor, the chip can receive RGB information separately from the information received from the white pixels, which in turn reduces image noise.

Oppo has announced that the chip will be improved for tasks such as noise reduction. Light quality in low-light environments, improved dynamic range in 4K video, and live previews have a lot to say. It should be noted that several companies have recently started to make proprietary image processing chips, and among them we can mention Xiaomi and Oppo. Google has also gone a step further and used a dedicated chipset for its latest handsets.

As photos taken with mobile cameras become more and more similar, companies are developing image processing chips. They want to increase the differentiation of their phones. The latest Oppo flagship phones are said to arrive with this chip in early 2022, and we have to see if the promises made by this company will be fulfilled or not.
