The first three layers of the James Webb solar shield are in place

After a few days of cessation of operations, the first three layers of the James Webb Space Telescope's massive sunscreen have finally been successfully deployed.>

The Web Mission Operations Team took the first steps in the process of stretching the telescope's sunscreen around 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time (18:30 Tehran time). The whole process of setting up five layers of canopy takes two to three days. The initial plan is to focus on the first layer, the largest and closest layer to the sun. Then the settings of the web power subsystem and change the web orientation to reduce the temperature of the operating motors were resumed.

This operation ended at 15:48 Eastern time zone (00:18 in the morning Tehran time) . By doing this, the first layer was firmly placed in its position. This was the first and largest of the five layers of sunscreen to experience the most heat from the sun.

The first two layers were then stretched. The second layer stretching operation started at 16:09 Eastern time zone (00:39 in the morning Tehran time) and lasted 74 minutes. The installation of the third layer of the web sunshade started at 17:48 (02:18 Tehran time) and lasted 71 minutes. Thus, the process of stretching the first three layers took a total of more than 5 and a half hours.

The final two-layer stretching is now scheduled for today. "The stretching phase of sunshades is very challenging because there is a complex interaction between the structures, the traction mechanism, the cables and the shells," said James Cooper, director of the Web solar shield at Goddard Space Flight Center. On Earth, this was the hardest part of the experiment, so we are very happy that everything is going well in space now. "The Northrop Gramman and NASA team is doing a great job, and we look forward to stretching the remaining layers." To detect infrared light that is made for observation.
