Scientists have discovered a new part of the body

Scientists have discovered a new part of the body that has never been described before: a deep layer of muscle in the masticatory muscle that separates the mandible. It enhances and is essential for chewing.

Modern anatomy books describe the masseter muscle, or sphincter, as having two layers, one deep and the other superficial. The authors of an article published in the Annals of Anatomy on December 2 (December 4) said: .

The research team decided to investigate whether the prominent jaw muscle may have an extremely deep, hidden layer, as shown in historical texts. To do this, they described 12 human corpses preserved in formaldehyde. According to the report, they also took 16 CT scans of new bodies and performed an MRI scan of a living person. Anatomically distinct, they identified the ulnar muscle. The results showed that this very deep layer of the zygomatic process, a bony protrusion that forms part of the cheekbones and can be felt right in front of the ear, to the coronoid process, a triangular protrusion on "This deep part of the master muscle is clearly distinguishable from the other two layers in terms of direction and function," said Szilvia Mezey, a professor in the Department of Biomedicine at the University of Basel in Switzerland.

The research team wrote in its report Based on the arrangement of muscle fibers, the muscle layer probably contributes to the stability of the mandible by elevating and contracting the coronary (beak) appendage. In fact, the newly discovered muscle layer is the only part of the master muscle that can pull the jawbone back.

" "Although it is generally assumed that anatomy research over the past 100 years has left nothing unknown, our findings are somewhat like those of zoologists who have discovered a new species of vertebrate."

They suggested that the newly discovered muscle layer be called "Musculus masseter pars coronidea" meaning "coronary artery". They noted that the discovery could be clinically significant because knowledge of the muscle layer could help doctors perform surgeries in that area of the jaw better, as well as the conditions associated with the joint that connects the jawbone to the skull.
