Square Enix: We chose the wrong studio to make the Avengers game

BingMag.com Square Enix: We chose the wrong studio to make the Avengers game

The Avengers game caused a great deal of excitement among fans last year before its release. Not only was it a game with a big budget from a major publisher, but a strong studio pair with Crystal Dynamics and Idos Montreal were behind it. Based on one of the world's largest and most popular series, the game did not turn out as well as expected. While the game continues to have ongoing support, it has reportedly caused a lot of financial losses for Square Enix. The company's president recently stated the reason for this.

Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda spoke to shareholders about the project's mistakes in the company's annual report. He pointed to the GaaS model (games as a service like Fortnite) and its incompatibility with game development studios because Crystal Dynamics as the main developer and Idos Montreal as the project support studio had never worked on a GaaS product before. He said the game model could still be effective, but the key to success would be adapting the studios to their strengths in the future. Crystal Dynamics, the creator of the Avengers game, is best known for its Tom Reader single-player series, and their next project is Perfect Dark, which will be made in collaboration with Xbox.

While the new challenge we faced with this game had disappointing results, we We are confident that the GaaS approach will become more important as games become more service-oriented. How we want to create new experiences by incorporating this process into our game design is a key question that we must answer in the future.

It's interesting to know that in a 2019 interview, Matsuda explained why he thinks Crystal Dynamics is the right game for the Avengers. "Crystal Dynamics has always been a company that makes action and adventure games," he said. From this point of view, I thought it would be suitable for making an Avengers game that would naturally be action.

The performance of the Avengers game was partly damaged due to technical problems at the time of release. In addition to these problems, the lack of post-release content, including delays in scheduled expansion packs and ninth-generation versions of the game, helped reduce the number of players. Despite ongoing efforts to improve the game, this work still suffers from major problems.
