Sony CFO: The Gimps method hurts the quality of our games
In his recent remarks, Hiroki Tutoki, Sony's Chief Financial Officer, reiterated the company's belief that the quality of PlayStation Studios' exclusive in-house studios, if at all. If the release date is added to PlayStation Plus, it will be reduced. The company's new PlayStation Plus subscription service will start this summer and will include a library of hundreds of games. However, unlike Microsoft's Gimps service, PlayStation's in-house studio exclusive games will not be added to the service on the day of release.
Sony said that if Sony wanted to follow Microsoft's model for Gimps, the result could be to allocate less resources to in-house studio games and ultimately reduce the overall quality of the work.
"If we offer PlayStation 5 top-tier titles on the shared service, we may need to reduce the investment needed for them. This worsens the quality of in-house studio games, and this is one of our concerns. Therefore, we want to make sure that we spend the right development costs to have powerful products and titles that are properly introduced and marketed.
This is not the first time Sony executives have commented on this. Following the announcement of PlayStation Plus in March, PlayStation Director Jim Ryan ruled out the possibility of games like God of War coming to the service on the day of its release.
" This is not the way we have been in the past and this is not the way we want to pursue this new service. We feel that if we want to do this with the games we make in PlayStation Studios, this cycle of virtue will be broken. "Under these circumstances, the huge level of investment we make in our studio games will not be possible, and we think this will have a negative impact on the quality of the games we develop, and this is not what gamers want."
Of course At the time, Jim Ryan noted that nothing was clear about the future of the new service in the long run: "Everything I'm talking about today is an approach we have taken in the short term. It makes no sense to offer our games on these services on the day of release in the way our studios are currently operating. "But as we all know, everything can change quickly in this industry."
Sony recently announced the launch date of the new PlayStation Plus service in various regions. As we get closer to the launch date of this service, we can expect to see a list of games in it soon.
