Metal Gear Solid 2, directed by Hideo Kojima, has received a third-person mod twenty years after its release, which has made the game experience different.

Project The Substance of Subsistence, or SOS, created by security and modding researcher Boris Larin, brings the third-person, shoulder-mounted camera from the expanded version of Metal Gear Solid 3 to the second version of the series. And it gives players a different experience. As you probably know, Metal Gear Solid 2 had a semi-moving but fixed camera that limited your view in the distance. Talking about his early inspirations and what kept him going through the various obstacles, Larin says:

I was reliving the Metal Gear series over the Christmas and New Years holidays and while having fun Being the second version, I kept thinking what if this game had the same third person camera as Metal Gear Solid 3? I had a feeling it would be amazing. After I came up with this idea, I closed the game and started looking at the code.

I wanted a camera for the game that worked exactly like the camera in the third edition, but Metal Gear Solid 3 never did. It didn't come out for PC, so I had to check the code for the PlayStation 2 and Vita versions as well, which was much more difficult. I spent a lot of time looking for information on different versions of Metal Gear Solid games. Metal Gear Solid fans inspired me to keep working and I worked on it on weekends and when I had free time during the summer.

Estimating that it took him a total of two months to complete Substance of Subsistence, Larin explains how something that might seem simple can be quite complex:

The real challenge was getting all my 3rd person camera code to work correctly. Making changes to the game code is very difficult. You change one thing and a million other things fall apart. The game was only coded to work with certain camera angles and did not allow for camera rotation. This fact made the workload very high. Many game codes had to be modified. It's interesting how many times I rewrote all my code.

However, I liked how the game engine worked. Its internal design is very close to the design of an operating system. I believe it is well developed by the developers and I enjoyed working on it despite all the problems. I've always wanted to experience this game like this and I know many others have asked for the same. In my opinion, Metal Gear Solid 2 is a timeless classic, and I'm happy to give fans a long-awaited gift on the game's 20th anniversary.

Project SOS November 5, 2022 ) that is, the 20th anniversary of the release of Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, will be available for free. Of course, you need a legal version of the game on PC to use it. You can see the released video below.
