BingMag.com Top 25 Actors in the 21st Century to Date (Selected by The New York Times)

When we decided to choose the best actors of 20 years of cinema, we realized that we are in the golden age of acting. There is no set equation for choosing the best, and this list is completely personal and will probably provoke dissenting opinions. Some of these actors are newcomers to cinema, and the rest have been working in it for decades.

For our choices, we have focused on the last century and tried to look beyond Hollywood. In addition to the Academy Award winners and nominees, there are others who still love cinema and the camera, perhaps more than ever.

The directors of these films soon became world famous, and with them, their co-star Gail Garcia Bernal, took a step in this direction. He looked at it. After these two films in which Bernal showed his power well, in 2004 he played the role of the young Che Guevara in Walter Sals, Memoirs of a Motorcycle, and in front of Pedro Almodvar in Bad Training. • Nationality: Brazil
  • >
  • Age: 71 years
  • Feature Movies: Kiss of the Spider Woman, Aquarius Night (Bacurau), Ftima

Those who have seen Aquaris know that Braga plays Clara, the writer whose apartment faces the ocean. The story is more about Clara's ordinary life and her adventures with her landlady. Braga easily fits into Culber Mendonca's film.

While watching Aquaris, pay attention to Braga's hair in various scenes and you will find that not only Mendonsa has brought an extraordinary character to the cinema, but also a unique actor for Play has chosen that character. Braga
is an actress with a long history and many national achievements.

BingMag.com Top 25 Actors in the 21st Century to Date (Selected by The New York Times)

  • Nationality: America
  • Age: 47 years
  • Featured Movies: Moonlight, Roxanne Roxanne, Green Book ), Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Man (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse)
  • Feature Awards: 2 Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor, 1 Golden Globe for Best Male Supporting Actor, 1 BAFTA Best Supporting Actor, 2 Awards for Best Supporting Actor from the Actors Guild

Mahershala Ali is one of the greatest figures in modern cinema. His presence in front of the camera is fascinating and dazzling. The characters he plays usually have their own rules and are defenseless in the face of society. Ali has won two Oscars for supporting characters.

The first Oscar for Mahtab was added to Ali's repertoire. A film in which Ali completely reconstructed one of the recurring Hollywood characters. In Mahtab, Ali plays a drug dealer, a character who represents violence and socialism, but what defines him in this film is his unkind kindness to the film's child protagonist and his distinctiveness.

Juan listens to the boy, answers his questions, and teaches him how to swim in one of the most influential scenes in the film. Ali disappears before the second act, but his presence for a few minutes, until the end of the film, captures the audience's mind. of Cards) was; Where he played Remy Danton, a Washington attorney whose short smile could indicate danger to the world around him.

In each of the two roles mentioned above, Ali Specific physical movements turned a character into his signature. Ali won his second Oscar for a completely different role from the two mentioned earlier. In Green Book, Ali plays the role of musician Behnam Dan Shirley; The Impenetrable Man Who Carries the Load of the Film

As cluttered and imperfect as the film is sometimes, Ali's portrayal is flawless and accurate. Both films for which Ali won an Oscar dealt with the cultural knots of the society and were able to win the Oscar for Best Picture.

22. Melissa McCarthy

BingMag.com Top 25 Actors in the 21st Century to Date (Selected by The New York Times)

  • Nationality: USA
  • >
  • Age: 51 years
  • Featured Movies: The Heat, Tammy, Spy, Can you ever forgive me? (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), The Starling

When critics look at comic book roles, such as Melissa McCarthy, they often come across repetitive points, such as timing, faces. They are flexible and attractive and sometimes forget that all this is part of acting. As McCarthy changed his path from television to cinema, he played a variety of roles with a wide range of characters, proving to everyone who he's supposed to be a movie star.

No movie more than Spy 2015 Has not served McCarthy's record. In the spy, he plays Susan, a CIA analyst who is sent on a mission. Lee Israel is a funny person, but he is a real character and you can never forgive me? It is not a comedy, and it cannot even be called a biography, but only a part of the literary and social movement of New York in the late twentieth century. It is not easy to find interest in Lee and care about him. He is self-destructive and constantly bites his tongue. McCarthy has a good grasp of the character and is completely immersed in it. The title of the film raises an honest question, and although you may not be able to forgive Lee for lying, making mistakes, and not paying attention to those around you, McCarthy certainly will not let you forget him.

21. Catherine Deneuve

BingMag.com Top 25 Actors in the 21st Century to Date (Selected by The New York Times)

  • Nationality: France
  • >
  • Age: 77 years
  • Feature films: The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Repulsion, The young girl of Rochefort ( The Young Girls of Rochefort, Belle de jour, Mississippi Mermaid, Tristana, Donkey Skin, The Last Metro, Dancer in the Dark the Dark), Persepolis

In his long career, in which Deno has collaborated with many authors, he is the one who plays every role well; From an ordinary wife whose luck is over, to an Iranian mother. In the Persepolis animation, Donovo talks about the character of Marjane Satrapi, the mother who co-directed the film with Vincent Parono.

We asked Satrapi why he chose Donovo for the role. "If you live in France, Catherine Deno is a symbol," he said. He was a dream when I was growing up. He always made choices that were ahead of his time; More anarchist than the bourgeoisie. She always looks like a Parisian woman from the upper class, which of course is not true.

She is a full-fledged rebel. The first time I met him, it was as if I was meeting God up close. I was very impressed and yet I had to direct him and I did not dare to tell him the slightest thing. For the first two hours I was completely paralyzed and she calmed me down.

Since she is a very noble woman, she told me, "You are the director and I am your actor. "Tell me what to do and I will do the same." He did not do this in front of others. "Let's go get a cigarette," he said. He told me this later when we were alone. For the mother character, I needed someone who would not be an extremely lovable mother, because this is not my mother character.

My mother is very lovable, but the mother of the film is one of those characters who keeps telling me to do this and that Do not work. I needed someone who was a strong woman. Katherine Deno speaks in a certain way that is not a joke, because she does not try to be lovable. He is outspoken. When he talks to you, he looks you straight in the eye.

Still, after all these years, every time I see him, my heart rate increases. He is like a lion; He is not loud and does not shout, but even if he is behind you and you can not see him, you will feel that he is a lion in the room, and this is also very exciting and very dangerous. He is wild and fearless and that is what I love about him.

20. Rob Morgan

BingMag.com Top 25 Actors in the 21st Century to Date (Selected by The New York Times)

  • Nationality: USA
  • >
  • Age: 40 years
  • Featured Movies: Mudbound, Monsters and Men, The Last Black Man In The Last Black Man in San Francisco, Just Mercy

's greatest actors are those who are paradoxical masters and move from one role to another. You can not easily recognize them in their maps, but they leave their fingerprints on all of them. If you have seen the four films mentioned above, the four films released from 2017 to 2019, you are aware of Rob Morgan, even if you do not know his name.

As a prisoner in line Execution, in the film Only Mercy, his presence is undoubtedly recognizable; A silent man surrounded by his regrets, his disabilities and his fears. In other films, he plays a father. In The Last Black Man, Morgan appears in a handful of scenes and has a few dialogues, but all the sadness that the film wants to achieve is imprinted on his face.

19. Wes Studio

BingMag.com Top 25 Actors in the 21st Century to Date (Selected by The New York Times)

  • Nationality: USA
  • >
  • Age: 73 years
  • Featured Movies: The Last of Mohicans, The New World, Avatar, Being Flynn, Hostiles

Wes Studio is one of the most unique faces in cinema; Nailing eyes that constantly shine on you. Directors use him as a symbol of a Native American, an innate decency, and a face that reflects the grief of a race. Adds your personality. He shows you both the face and the mask and what lies beneath it; Both thoughts and feelings. Studio was introduced to the cinema as the Avengers with Michael Mann's Last Mohican. The character that this actor brought to the silver screen with his strong physique and the pressures of his surroundings, his impatience and anger. Conclusion with the least facilities is one of the main features of the characters that the studio has taken in front of the camera; Like many of his other characters in Avatar and Avatar.

Like many other actors, he has played many roles in cinema and television that are easily forgotten. If Westerns were still popular, he was one of the main ones He was their actor, and if the film industry had been more adventurous, he would probably have played more roles as a shelter manager for the homeless, like Flynn 2012; A man who, as the studio says, "is not wearing leather and feathers."

18. Willem Dafoe

BingMag.com Top 25 Actors in the 21st Century to Date (Selected by The New York Times)

  • Nationality: USA
  • >
  • Age: 66 years
  • Feature Movies: Platoon, The Last Temptation of Christ Wild at Heart, Shadow of the Vampire, Antichrist, The Hunter, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Pasolini, The Florida Project At At Eternity's Gate

The actor has made a vital appearance in cinema over the past two decades; From the vampire shadow 2000 to the Florida Project 2017 for which he was nominated for an Oscar. He has also been nominated for an Academy Award for his role as Van Gogh in Julian Schnabel's autobiography At the Gate of Eternity. We asked Schnabel why he chose Defoe.

He replied, "Defoe and I met more than thirty years ago. He always lived in my neighborhood and we had many mutual friends. Oliver Stone was filming The Doors in New York, and one night we were standing near the set, and it was the first time we talked.

One thing that really matters is this That he is a very generous actor. He cares about casting other actors and is always available to others, no matter what he is doing. He is very loyal and very very smart. If you have an intelligent person, your film will be better.

For the gate of eternity, I needed someone with a deep personality to bring Van Gogh to life, and being like him was not the only thing I cared about it. He had to have someone with a lot of personal experience to be able to play his role. People were protesting that Willem was sixty and Van Gogh when he was thirty-seven, but that did not matter to me.

It is enough to feel that you can trust someone to do something. I had a lot of trust in Willem and this level of trust is always mutual. There are pictures that we took immediately after he arrived in Arles, and even though he had the same hairstyle and the same clothes, we could not use them in the film because Willem had not yet become Van Gogh.

Then there was a special moment when suddenly he was Van Gogh himself. He had changed and was now someone else. One of my favorite scenes is where he is talking to young Dr. Ray; Someone he meets after he has his ear cut off. The doctor assures him that he can continue painting while in the nursing home.

The contrast and what Willem is doing is extraordinary. He is just sitting in a chair and there is not much room to move, but what is inside his face, in response to what the young doctor tells him and what is going on in his mind at that moment, is a complete perspective of the life he is living. Has passed. "

17. Alfrey Woodard

BingMag.com Top 25 Actors in the 21st Century to Date (Selected by The New York Times)

  • Nationality: United States
  • Age: 68 years
  • Feature films: The Forgotten, Something New, 12 years of slavery ( Years a Slave 12), Clemency

In a fair world, Woodard's career should have been full of different and high-quality designs that revealed his talents, and everyone knows that such designs for There are few black women, but even in small roles in lesser-known films and TV series, Woodard has an unforgettable and very real presence. The "wombs" have been the Chokas, both of whom challenge the definitions of the contemporary form of justice. In both films, Woodard must expose the moral dignity and authenticity of his characters to society and to extremely brutal circumstances. Contrary to her human beliefs, in "12 Years of Slavery," Mrs. Shaw, whose secret affair with landlords benefits her, struggles with a system that does not consider her human. The categories that Bernardine and Mrs. Shaw are involved with are more than one person, but Woodard makes them individual with his brilliant design.

16. Kim Min Hee

BingMag.com Top 25 Actors in the 21st Century to Date (Selected by The New York Times)

  • Nationality: South Korea
  • Age: 39 years
  • Featured Movies: Helpless, Right Now, Not Right Now (Right Now, Wrong Then), The Handmaiden

In the movie, a woman and a man meet right now, not right from Sang Soo. They drink and have fun, and then in the second half of the film they repeat all this; Something reminiscent of "Groundhog Day." Although in the second round they repeat exactly the same tasks of the first round, what needs to change for this second round to be something different from the first round has changed; How they look at each other and how they feel in their voices. He is present. A stylistic author who tells bony and entertaining stories based on human flaws; Familiar things sometimes happen in unfamiliar ways.

Everything is different in Sangsu Minimal films; From the way the dialogues are delivered to the body movements of the characters. The difference is that in the second half of the film, right now, not right now, new dimensions of the characters are revealed and new tensions are created between them. These films have another advantage, which is that they allow Kim to do whatever he wants and create his own characters. Kim makes his character acceptable as a whole while having two different faces. Kim Emma's best-known film is The Maid, a hilarious story set in Korea in the 1930s.

A film whose insane twists allow Kim to reach her full potential. He gathers from the strong to the weak, from the devil to the angel, and from the great to the small in one character. His body is expressive and his face changes with every fear and suffering that enters and leaves his life. The character Kim plays in The Maid is a big, unknown question, but he deciphers it well.
