Superman 4 (1987); A film that ruined Superman's cinematic future for two decades

BingMag.com Superman 4 (1987); A film that ruined Superman's cinematic future for two decades

You have heard it said, "They salt as much as they can; "Woe to the day when salt stinks"? The day Superman 4 was released was the day the salt rotted. "Superman 1" tried to take the genre of superhero cinema out of the swamp of Camp, ridicule and low budget, and give it seriousness and credibility, and succeeded. Superman 4 was the return of the superhero genre to everything that Superman 1 wanted to save the genre from. "Superman 4" was so bad that no one went to make a film about Superman until 2006.

The story of the failure of Superman 4 is very sad. If you have a dream of making a movie, but you do not think it is possible and you are looking for an external factor to get this dream out of your head, maybe it's not bad to hear the story of Superman 4, because it includes all the features that you can in the process Make a movie with them. Behind the scenes of "Superman 4" was where dreams went to die.

After the defeat of Superman 3 and Supergirl, the producers of the series, Alexander & Illya Salkind, gave it to the rival. And sold Superman's rights to Cannon Group Inc. for $ 5 million.

The problem was that Canon film Company was a junk company that produced dozens of 4th grade films every year in bulk, and for years it had had no successful films in its repertoire, so it was in dire economic straits.

One of Rio's personal concerns is preventing war. It was an atom that in those days, because of the tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union in the 1980s, cast a heavy shadow on humanity. that is why, according to his choice, there are 4 scenes in Superman in which Superman, after giving a speech at the United Nations, collects all the nuclear warheads of the world, gathers them in a big tour and throws them towards the sun. This scene is very rhetorical, but at the same time there is a hidden charm in it. Superman's nature is so idealistic that he may be the only superhero to write such a scene.

but unfortunately The issue of collecting nuclear warheads is only a short part of the film, and contrary to the film's title, the search for peace is not the main issue. The main theme of the film is the emergence of a new villain called Nuclear Man, created by Lex Luther (who returned to the film).

The nuclear man is a very powerful creature, but he has a big weakness, that is, it only works with sunlight. As soon as it is in a dark environment, it shuts down like a robot with a depleted battery. The core man had the potential to become an acceptable villain. But all that potential was wasted, and that's the main reason behind the film's failure: Kenen's stinginess.

A month before filming began, Canon cut the film budget from $ 36 million to $ 17 million. If you watch the movie, you will see the effect clearly. Superman 4 special effects are among the worst special effects among superhero movies. These special effects are so bad that they make Superman 4 look like an unfinished movie.

Superman 4, and Overall, Christopher Rio's Superman series is a prime example of a work that went backwards in the hands of tasteless, scaly, and short-sighted people and destroyed its extraordinary potential. The interesting thing about smart and calculating people is that their cleverness always ends up to their detriment. If Kenan had not been so financially unfriendly to this film and in Do not mess up the film's editing room, maybe Superman 4 would become exactly the good and popular movie that could have saved their company from bankruptcy.

Superman was a movie in which the producers did everything they could to ensure its failure and succeeded. The film had potential, but eventually fell head over heels due to the ego and short-sightedness of a group of people who did not value Superman's art and character, and closed the case of the Superman series starring Christopher Rio forever. Finally, I would like to quote Rio's autobiography, which very briefly and usefully explains the reason for the failure of this film, and in general, of all the masquerading films that have been made so far and are to be made in the future:

The budget was a big obstacle in all areas. Cannes Films was in the process of producing 30 projects at the same time, and among them Superman 4 did not receive any special attention. For example, Connor and Rosenthal (the screenwriters) wrote a scene in which Superman lands on 42nd Street in New York and walks along double yellow lines to enter the United Nations and speak there. If this scene was written for Superman 1, we would have filmed it on the actual 40th Street. Richard Donner (director of the first film) accurately plotted the movements and reactions of hundreds of passers-by and cars, showing people staring out of their office window at Superman, who was playing like Hamlin's. It was walking down the street. Instead, we had to film the scene in an industrial park in England, while it was raining. We had about a hundred blacksmiths, and there was not even a single car around us. About a dozen pigeons were released to create an atmosphere in the air. "Even if the story was clever, I do not think we could have ever met the audience's expectations with such an approach."> Sydney J. Fury
