“Grey Man” film review; We have regretted turning to gold

At a time when the character of James Bond is shedding skin and Tom Cruise is approaching the end of his journey with the series of "Mission Impossible" films. World cinema needs a new franchise in which the spying of all rivals plays the role of the hero and keeps the world safe; A spy who has the power of seduction, is good-looking, has a fearless face and a courageous heart, and who never violates his principles and remains loyal to his country's flag. Naturally, such a hero has evil enemies whose only goal is to destroy the world or all the beliefs of the other side and they know no other way than to be enemies with the ideals for which Mr. Aberjasos Omari sacrificed his life. So the hero must use his abilities to stand against this evil desire of the anti-hero.

There is a risk of revealing the story in the review of the film "The Gray Man"

This formula is a constant and successful formula in the history of cinema. Since Ian Fleming wrote his series of books centered on a super spy called James Bond, and then the cinema went to them, this formula has worked until today. If there have been changes over time, it was all in the details, otherwise the general formula of such stories is the same as said; For example, with the end of the Cold War, the enemies of James Bond films changed and instead of opposing governments, former Soviet spies or international super smugglers rose to war with the British hero. which fills the void caused by the beginning of this transition period and becomes the new product of the current spy action world. Everything on paper is ready for his success; The company provided a lot of money to the producers, a handsome actor like Ryan Gosling played the main role, the director of the film was the helmsman who showed that he is quite capable in designing action sequences, and finally, they tried to follow the same formula as the story of the film. Data remains faithful. Even the pattern of going around the world to reach the final answer, which is abundantly found in James Bond movies or "Mission Impossible", is observed here. But why can't you enjoy this movie? Why can't "Grey Man" be considered a rightful replacement for those movies?

The first reason is due to the dual role of the hero in the heart of the drama. The film obviously intends not to fall behind the current fashion trends in Hollywood films, for this reason, it has left a part of its hero's characteristics to a woman who is the companion of the main hero. The makers even go a step further and loudly declare that the hero has no chance of winning in the end without this woman's help. This is not a bad thing in itself, but not for a movie like this that clearly needs a solo hero. In fact, the filmmaker, outside of the fictional world and dramatic logic, has added a female character to his story that can be easily removed and there is no need for her to be present. Such a role, the filmmaker avoids creating an emotional relationship between him and the hero of the drama played by Ryan Gosling. This issue could become a major strength in another film, but this woman, in this story, needs more motivation than duty to accompany the positive pole of the drama. It is true that his strength is not in his outward attractiveness and lies in his ability to carry out various missions, but the result of such a comprehensive characterization is to move away from the elements of the same old successful formula.

Such a choice makes the main hero The story does not become a complete hero; A hero who can be trusted to take control of another critical situation at another time. And this means the loss of the chance of making the next films of the franchise centered on this character. Since movies like this are made based on the characteristics of the main character more than anything else, and in fact the events are arranged around them, it is impossible to imagine that a complete story world will be formed around this man.

On the other hand, the anti-hero or the negative pole of the film also lacks a necessary worldview for such a film; A worldview that makes him a unique person. In successful films that use the mentioned formula, the negative pole of the story is always a psychotic and self-conceited person who has a crazy and unique idea about life and the world. He sees the world from a certain angle and designs all his plans in such a way as to expand and expand the same idea. These evil creatures have created an enemy in their minds, which are the ideals of the positive pole of the story. Now, the empire around this anti-hero is arranged in such a way that it serves the implementation of the same unique idea. In order to face him, the other side must first pass through all of this empire; It means first to destroy the idea in order to reach his enemy.

But in "The Gray Man" there is no mention of this vital detail. The negative pole of the film is some mercenaries and rogue agents who not only do not have a single worldview, but They do not have a convincing reason for violence. If you take away this violence from them, they are no different from some thugs. Especially the head of the gang, played by Chris Evans, who seems to be a character who stands on the evil side of a huge story and must have a convincing reason for this choice. The construction of the negative pole of the story is essential because it makes the actions of the hero to be seen in the light of his predatory nature and intelligence, otherwise all the mind-boggling actions of the heroes of the drama are not worth appreciating. In "Grey Man", this issue is brought to the fore when the final unraveling is finally formed by the stupidity of the negative pole and the actions of the positive pole can be ignored.

Of course, "Grey Man" also has good moments. Is; The sequences where Billy Bob Thornton appears in front of the filmmaker's frame make the film a head and neck higher than the rest. He has played his role in such a way that everyone is inferior to him. His performance simply shows that great actors can make even minor roles interesting.>Director: The Russo Brothers
